BIG night in Aspen/ I'll Be There.

Who's Bad. Click 4 Pix.It was supposed to be a nice, quiet weekend. Gay Ski Week  petered out and X Games wasn't starting until Thursday.  AspenSpin would have settled for a few laps and play-off football.  A rest period so to speak.  Then we realized it was a full moon.

Saturday turned out to be a POW day leading into a BIG night in Aspen. Just call out my name. I'll be there.

After skiing all day, we joined our Buckaroo Brothers (and a few hearty ladies) for a cabin party in the back country.  A mild hike and a super-sick POW run down to The Cabin was followed by THE BEST LASAGNE EVER.  It was a great home cooked meal chased by lots of Stranahan Whiskey Sno Cones.  It continued to snow, but the sky cleared to reveal some of the brightest stars we've ever seen.  As we began our trip back to Aspen, the normally skate-able trail had to be broken.  Things got sweaty. Several calf muscles were pulled, but we skied down safely under the full moon.

AspenSpin completed the 3 S's in record time.  We scored a coveted ticket to Belly Up to see WHO's BAD, the greatest Michael Jackson tribute band in the world.  Who doesn't like the King of Pop?  The crowd near the stage was composed  mostly of ladies of a certain age.....and boy do they love Jacko.....  or  even fake Jacko.  Who's Bad brought out the best of the best.  More Mommy foxes than you can count.

Jacuzzi Geography: Gay Ski Week in Aspen.

Sir GaGa. Gay Ski Week in Aspen. What was he wearing underneath his meat dress?? Skis and boots. Click 4 PixHow many guys can you squeeze into a Jacuzzi??? ...... more than you can ever imagine.

Aspen's 34th annual Gay Ski Week blew into town for a week of fun, festivities and relationship building.  Friendship dinners were happening all over town.  Boys just wanna have fun...and they did. Click 4 Pix.

One of the best parts about living in Aspen is the free spirited culture... we call it the "live and let live" attitude.  Gay Ski Week (GSW) was still in the closet 34 years ago.  In 1977, Aspen was the only mountain town with enough style, sophistication and tolerance to handle an openly gay skiing holiday.  Today, other GSWs have chipped away at Aspen's market leadership.  GSWs in Whistler,Teluride and other resorts have sprouted up as competitors to Aspen.  AspenSpin didn't cover many GSW events this season, but we did happen to stroll by The LimeLight Lodge for "Camp Aspen" an après event. The jacuzzi was overflowing and the sounds of happiness pierced the air.  There is only one Aspen...and partner....don't you ever forget it.

The raucous GSW pride parade is always a highlight of the week.  Host/Hostess Sister Helen Holy emceed for the 10th straight year and he/she busted on everybody.  Chilly but sunny conditions allowed the revelers to show a lot more skin than was necessary as they rode down the Little Nell run at the base of Ajax. A standing room only crowd cheered wildly as body parts were flashed, shrinkage was prevalent and the Bud Light flowed like wine.  Check the Pix.

Business of the Year: The Aspen Club.

Robin and Michael Fox & Friends.Editor's note:  The Aspen Club was the first sponsor of AspenSpin, thanks for helping us live the dream.  ACRA's Business of the Year award is much deserved.  The Aspen Club and it's staff along with owner Michael Fox are  friendly, generous and valued members of the Aspen Community.  Aspen Club is more than just a gym and spa....its a second home to many in the valley.  We wish them luck on their next chapter.... ASPEN CLUB LIVING.  Below is a letter from Michael Fox.

Dear Editor:

I wanted to give a heartfelt thank-you to the community of Aspen as well as the Aspen Chamber Resort Association for awarding the Aspen Club & Spa the Business of the Year, given to us at the Wintersköl Luncheon last week. (And thank you to Chris Klug and Warren Klug for the essential items we will need in the upcoming construction process. I am sure that duct tape will come in handy in the next few years.)

Wintersköl's theme this year was a “Cut Above the Rest,” and it was only fitting that The Aspen Club & Spa was granted this award as the business representing this theme. We strived during 2010 to characterize just that, a place where locals and visitors alike can go to realize their highest levels of health and performance — whether as a member, a fitness client, in our Sports Medicine clinic, our spa or our salon, to become a cut above the rest in order to reach their individual goals and aspirations.

With our Aspen Club Living approvals from City Council in June, we have begun to realize our own aspirations of becoming a leading destination healthy living center of excellence — a “cut above the rest” in Aspen, the country and the world. We have already started to add classes, new programs, new equipment and leading instructors in order to stay at that forefront, and we will continue to do this in the next few years as we transform from The Aspen Club & Spa to Aspen Club Living.

Thank you again for all of your continued support and to the chamber for recognizing us during this fantastic winter weekend in Aspen — we are proud to represent this community!

Freak Power in Aspen

HST on the Campaign Trail in Aspen in 1970.The Aspen Historical Society kicked off their popular program TIME TRAVEL TUESDAYs by showing a very rare documentary about HUNTER S. THOMPSON's infamous FREAK POWER campaign for Pitkin County Sheriff in 1970.  HIGH NOON in Aspen Revisited-- a film produced for the Brittish television network, ITV...a more liberal rival of the BBC, showed stunning footage of Aspen in 1970...along with a few familiar faces.

The ITV interpretation of the events pitted the "Goodies vs. Baddies" in an old western style showdown at High Noon...for the soul of Aspen.  The goodies...or the establishment supported incumbent Carrol Whitmire, while the long-haired hippies supported HST and a "free thinking" lifestyle.

Hunter S. Thompson entered the election on a whim, but began to take things more seriously as the possibility of a victory grew.  The highly contested election brought out over 70% of the voters in Pitkin County.  ITV made note that more than "1000 known freaks" lived in and around the woods of Aspen.  One goodie interviewed explained how the freaks voted early in the day...because "they have no work".

Aspen Mayor Eve Homeyer campaigned against HST.HIGH NOON has never been shown publicly in the United States before the Aspen Historical Society tracked down the very rare piece of film.  It's a must-view for anyone who has ever thought about going up against the man, likes HST or has an interest in Aspen History. Aspen Spin says "Highly Recommended".  One key scene revealed a young man in an Aspen Police uniform smoking reefer with a group of naked hippies at the hot springs.  It was revealed  later that he was actually the dog catcher--not a sworn officer.  Thompson's campaign carried the liberal City of Aspen, but the outlying Pitkin County voters shot him down.  A spirited panel discussion ensued. with people who were there in 1970.  Per Jay Cowens... many in Aspen at the time felt that long-hair was a good enough reason enough to scrap.   Marty Horowitz admitted that he came to Aspen in 1968 to "turn on, tune in and drop out".

40 years later current Pitkin County Sheriff, the recently elected Joe DiSalvo traces his roots to HST.  In 1976, Dick Kienast was elected sheriff and he promoted a "live and let live" philosophy reminiscent of HST.  Kienast gave way to Bob Braudis whole officiated for 25 years and counted HST as a close friend.  DiSalvo is a Braudis disciple.

FREAK POWER still lives in Aspen.

Harley Baldwin was anti-freak.
