Del Mar Opening Day
Horses and Hats. A record crowd of 45,309 opened the 2010 Thoroughbred season at historic Del Mar Raceway. Where the surf meets the turf. Its a long way from the Kentucky Derby but the Del Mar crowd likes to get after it on opening day. Hats and booze were much more popular than the magnificent race horses. Even the betting seemed like an afterthought as the high rollers from Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar and La Jolla mixed with the "boats and hos" crowd from East County and South County.
Grey skies and a traffic nightmare could not keep the Californicators from getting their drink on.
AspenSpin had to "hoof it" for over a mile to avoid hours in a traffic jam. 25,000 cars feeding into one lane = no bueno.
