The Arty Party

Big news from the Coast.   Carolyn's story is posted on AspenSpin unedited.

There will be a fabulous artists’ showcase, The Arty Party, at the home of Carolyn Rogers, my adored colleague from grad school days at Wharton, this April in Portola Valley, California, right next to Stanford.  She and her husband, Tom Stepien, CEO of Primus Power, a high-tech big battery start-up, will host four artists in their home, including two Colorado artists: watercolorist Susan Montague of Denver and constructivist Kris Cox, who resides in a stunning home in Basalt; and one former Colorado artist, painter Kalani Engles.  On hand for live entertainment is Bundy Browne with Rick Sigman,  Bay Area guitar players who blend Rhythm, Blues, and Country with a little Reggae.

Kris Cox, originally from Los Angeles, studied at Claremont and received his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.  He has been featured in Galleries across the U.S and in Santa Fe at the renowned LewAllen Galleries.  He has been celebrated at more than 50 solo exhibitions.  His work is included in the collections of LA County Museum of Art, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Oakland Art Museum, General Mills, and Prudential Insurance Art Collections.  From his bio: “Operating at the nexus of Modernist composition and venerable craftsmanship, the art of Kris Cox deftly balances the mechanics of industry with the poetics of the handmade.”  His background in ceramics and an impressive technical knowledge allows the creation of complex modern panels that are both minimal and offer intriguing nuances under close inspection.

Susan Montague creates watercolor portraits capturing the human experience in expressive faces of the common man. Using layer upon layer of transparent paint, she creates the mood and character of her subjects. Susan, a native of Colorado with a BFA from CSU, is an award-winning member of the American Watercolor, the National Watercolor, the Western Federation of Watercolor, the Colorado Watercolor and the Texas Watercolor Societies. She has been published in Southwest Art and Watercolor Artist Magazines, including cover images.  Susan was featured in an exhibition at the Grants Pass Museum of Art in Oregon and is represented by gallery Elements 5280 in Greenwood Village, Colorado.  She won top prize at the NY based American Watercolor Society Exhibition taking the Bronze Medal of Honor.

Also on hand will be three California based artists: Painter Kalani Engles and Graphic Artist, Scott J. Cooper. Kalani Engles studied at Stanford; her organic impressionistic and abstract paintings and sculptures are shown in galleries in San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. Notably, she lived in Colorado for years with museum shows in Fort Collins and Casper, Wyoming with representation at Inkfish Gallery in Denver. Scott J. Cooper is an artist and entrepreneur living in Copenhagen.  With influence from his days as a printmaker, his watercolor paintings carry a theme of the human figure with a penchant for dark comedy, including shadowy characters, lyrical dancers, plant life, and ladders to nowhere.

Dozer Cycle & Studio in Detroit

Mr. Strangway is a real guy...and he's an artist with a blowtorch.

Dozer Cycle and Studio. Works in SteelVery few people have ever actually heard Strangway's real name.  In the custom motorcycle world he goes by the single named moniker of Dozer.

Dozer is as authentic as they come and he's been living the biker lifestyle in the Detroit area for decades.  He built his first custom bike in 1979 and he is still rolling that chopper today.

Dozer and his ol' lady, Cate Strumbos have turned Dozer's passion for custom motorcycles into a successful business.  Dozer Cycle & Studio at 15 and Crooks in Clawson, Michigan is one part working garage and one part art gallery and 100% legit.

Click: DOZER CYCLE and STUDIO

Dozer, first and foremost is a creator, a maker and a builder.  With no formal training he has carved out a respected career niche capitalizing on his talent for fabrication and design and his love of custom motorcycles.  Dozer's mentor in the custom bike world was Ron Finch, a world famous bike builder.  Dozer eventuaslly broke off on his own and started Dozer Cycle and Studio.

Custom made Art by Dozer.Dozer Cycle and Studio is more than just commissioned custom motorcycles.  Dozer creates one of a kind art pieces, furniture and works in steel and cast iron.  Dozer's art is resourceful and often inspired by finding new applications for recycled materials.  Dozer's work has been shown at MOCAD  (Museum Of Contemporary Art Detroit) and has earned him blue ribbons at Maker Faire.  Dozer's work has been featured in numerous bike mags such as Bike World and Easy Rider.  Creating "works in steel" takes creativity and execution...luckily Dozer excels at both. When I asked him... Dozer described his work as "simplification" and "addition by subtraction".  "Less is more" he said.

Dozer is a business owner and a husband and father, but he's only shaved twice since 1975.  I'd say that qualifies him as the real deal.  Check out his site  DOZER CYCLE and STUDIO.  Step your game up...commission a custom bike from Dozer in Detroit.

The Way of the Shred.

Aspen is a small town with a BIG heart.  Last weekend's early opening was fantastic.  This Saturday's official kick off to the season was the real deal.  The snow base on Aspen Mountain is equivalent to mid-February last year.  The Aspen Mountain ski patrol got busy and opened plenty of new terrain including Bell Mountain and The Glades.  Bro-brahs were straight-lining the Ridge of Bell without fear.  Coverage was good.  The best part...no one was around.  Apparently the opening at  Snowmass drew big crowds.  But Ajax had the goods...and those goods got got.

AspenSpin...known for skiing everyday and partying every night managed to squeeze in a couple social events too.

Muralist, Kate Howe unveiled her latest mixed media creation at Aspen Highlands.  Her beautiful work entitled Almost Time to Ski now permanently adorns the wall of Aspen Highlands locker room.  She's already working on her next piece at Cloud 9 Restaurant on the mountain at Aspen Highlands.  Kate's art along with her expert ski pro-ing, massage and yoga keeps her plenty busy.  Commission her now.

Aspen's native son and U.S. Ski Team member and Olympic hopeful ski racer, Wiley Maple threw himself a fundraiser at Belly Up. Family, freinds, plenty of silent auction items and a screening of Winter, the newest ski porn from The Ski Channel were on the docket.  Unfortunately, Wiley got a bit of bad news yesterday about his troublesome knee.  The Orthopedic Doc's have shut him down for the season.  Heel up soon Wiley.

So it was a great weekend in Aspen.  A super kick-off to hopefully a POW filled season.  We'll see you out on the mountain.

Sexploitation, Art and Crime in Aspen

Associated Press
07/15/10 1:30 PM PDT

The verdict is in. Click here.

ASPEN, COLO. — A trial is under way for a former Aspen police officer charged with placing a video camera in a shower used by his teenage stepdaughter.

Joe Holman is charged with attempted sexual exploitation of a child and attempted criminal invasion of privacy. He resigned in June 2009 after the allegation surfaced.

In opening statements Wednesday, defense attorney H. Lawson Wills said the camera didn't work and that Holman had put it in the shower on an impulse because he was angry at the girl and knew she would find it and become upset.

Prosecutor Jonathan Pototsky argued that Holman wanted to videotape the girl in the nude.

Holman is also charged with tampering with evidence. His lawyer has acknowledged Holman destroyed the camera after the girl found it.
